Impingement syndrome

Subacromial pain syndrome (SAPS)

Impingement syndrome is an outdated name for a shoulder problem that causes pain when lifting the arm above shoulder height and arises from overuse.

New name for impingement syndrome

Nowadays, we speak of subacromial pain syndrome instead of impingement syndrome. The term "impingement" refers to an "entrapment," but that does not always have to be the cause of the complaints. The new term has therefore become a little more general.
