About 100 different conditions are covered by the term rheumatism. These are conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system that are not the result of an accident. The most common complaints associated with rheumatism are pain, stiffness, fatigue and swollen joints. Patients have usually been experiencing these complaints for some time before eventually being referred to a rheumatologist, who can make a diagnosis.

Appointment with the rheumatologist

An appointment with the rheumatologist begins with a discussion about the complaints and problems. This is followed by a physical examination in which the joints are examined and tested.

A joint aspiration, blood tests or an X-ray may be needed to make the correct diagnosis. Once it is clear what is wrong, treatment is started. This may involve medication or surgery, but also lifestyle advice.

Working with other specialists

The rheumatologist works closely with other specialists, such as the orthopaedic surgeon if surgery is required, or the neurologist when pain relief is needed. A physiotherapist is also often involved to help people move better again or learn to cope with their limitations.
