Strassburg Sock
Night splint
The Strassburg Sock is an elastic stocking used for complaints of the plantar fascia under the foot. With a hook-and-loop fastener, the sock pulls the forefoot closer to the shin. The Strassburg Sock was designed by Dr. David Strassburg in 1993.
Dr. Strassburg himself suffered a lot from a painful plantar fascia under the sole of the foot. He came up with the idea of stretching this plantar fascia during the night. According to him, this would lead to more relaxation of the fascia and therefore to a reduction in pain.
How does the Strassburg Sock work?
The Strassburg Sock stretches the Achilles tendon and the plantar fascia under the sole of the foot. Due to this forced position, the ankle remains in the most bent position, a position called dorsiflexion. The continuous stretch on the plantar fascia ensures that it cannot contract. As a result, the tension on the plantar fascia and pain therefore decrease.
The intention is to wear the stocking for at least 6 hours in a row. For this reason, the night is most suitable. As a treatment for heel spur complaints, it is recommended to use the sock for at least two to three months.
What is a Strassburg Sock used for?
The use of the Strassburg Sock is mainly recommended for heel spur, Achilles tendinopathy, and plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the plantar fascia. For the best possible result, it is important to have complaints examined first by a physiotherapist or podiatrist. After the physical examination, they will decide whether a Strassburg Sock will positively influence the complaints.
There are also a number of complaints for which the use of the Strassburg Sock is not recommended. These include lymphoedema (fluid under the skin), rash, and open wounds. In case of doubt, it is wise to discuss this first with the GP or therapist.
Where can I buy a Strassburg Sock?
A Strassburg Sock is available at most care shops or chemists. Many physiotherapy practices or podiatry practices also offer the sock. For the best result, it is wise to combine the use of the Strassburg Sock with other (physiotherapy) treatments, exercises, and orthotic insoles.
