Naproxen

Naproxen is used as an anti-inflammatory and painkiller for complaints where there are signs of inflammation. It suppresses pain and inflammation.

Using naproxen does not always address the cause of the complaints. It can therefore be sensible to additionally consult a physiotherapist. The physiotherapist will examine the complaints and, if this falls within their scope of practice, draw up a treatment plan.

What is naproxen used for?

For physical complaints such as rheumatoid arthritis, joint pain, ankylosing spondylitis, headache, gout, osteoarthritis, and muscle pain, the GP may decide to prescribe naproxen.

What are possible side effects of naproxen?

Using naproxen may cause side effects. Side effects that occur regularly are stomach and bowel problems. These are seen in 10 to 30 out of 100 people. Slightly less frequent—seen in 1 to 10 out of 100 people—are side effects such as oesophageal stricture, stomach or intestinal ulcer, tinnitus, dizziness, and skin rash.

Where is naproxen available?

Like diclofenac and ibuprofen, naproxen is an NSAID (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug). This means it is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory. Naproxen is available as a suppository and in tablet form from a chemist or pharmacy. Naproxen is available under the brand name Aleve and generically as Naproxen.
