Bursa

A bursa is a small sac containing a small amount of fluid. Normally, these are almost invisible, but that changes when they become inflamed.

Bursae are found in places where friction occurs, for example, between the skin and a bone or between a tendon and a bone. The task of the bursa is to ensure that these structures can glide easily over each other.

There are many bursae in the body, such as in the hip, knee, elbow, and shoulder. Examples of bursae that lie directly under the skin can be found at the front of the knee or the back of the elbow. A bursa that separates the tendon from the bone is found under the arch of the shoulder or at the attachment of the Achilles tendon.

Bursitis

When a bursa becomes inflamed, there is a bursitis. The bursa is painful and swells. Bursitis occurs regularly in the knee and the shoulder.
