Progressive and regressive

Increasing and decreasing

The terms "progressive" and "regressive" are used in the medical world to describe the development of a disease or physical complaints. "Progressive" means that the condition or complaints worsen over time, while "regressive" indicates that a condition or complaints improve.

Example

An example of the use of these terms is in conditions such as Parkinson's disease or osteoarthritis. If the symptoms worsen over time, then it is a progressive condition. On the other hand, if someone has sustained an injury and the pain and limitations decrease after treatment or rest, this is a regressive development.

It is important to note that these terms are mainly used by (para)medical professionals to describe changes in health. As a patient, you do not necessarily have to be familiar with these terms. However, they can help you better understand the explanation or a report from the physiotherapist or doctor.
