Additional testing

The physical examination performed by the physiotherapist does not always yield sufficient information. It may then be relevant to perform additional investigations.

Examples of additional investigations are, for example, an X-ray or an MRI scan. Some investigations can be done by the physiotherapist themself (ultrasound imaging, myofeedback), others are performed in the hospital or a clinic (X-ray, MRI scan, EMG, etc.). For an investigation in the hospital, a GP referral is usually required.

Additional investigations can be important to find out exactly what is going on or how extensive the damage is. In this way the physiotherapist can make a better assessment of the severity of the injury and adjust the treatment accordingly. It also becomes easier to make a statement about the expected recovery.

A number of these additional investigations are described below.
