Neck pain

The neck supports the head and thus has an important role. The head weighs approximately 4–6 kilograms and should ideally sit centred above the shoulders. Unfortunately, in many people this is not the case, as the head is carried too far forward, resulting in neck pain. However, poor posture is not the only cause of neck pain.

Anatomy of the neck

The neck consists of seven cervical vertebrae. Cervical vertebrae are bones with a vertebral body and several pointed projections extending backward and to the sides. The spinal canal runs vertically through the vertebrae.

Inside this canal lies the spinal cord, consisting of a bundle of nerve pathways from which nerves branch out on both sides. These nerves extend to the arms, controlling muscle movements and enabling sensation (sensory function).

Surrounding the cervical vertebrae are muscles and ligaments. Important blood vessels supplying the brain also run along these vertebrae.

Between each pair of vertebrae (except the top ones) lies an intervertebral disc. These discs are softer than bone and allow mobility and shock absorption in the neck.

Neck complaints
As mentioned, poor posture is a common cause of neck pain. This can result from spending long hours at the computer or looking down at a smartphone.

There are also specific conditions that cause neck pain, such as a pinched nerve or a whiplash following an accident. These symptoms often extend beyond the neck and may include headaches or radiating pain into the arms.

Check your neck pain

To find out the cause of your neck pain, you can take the physiotherapy check. This is an online questionnaire that identifies how your symptoms developed and their associated issues. The outcome provides insight into the possible cause of your complaints and their treatment. It is advisable to make an appointment with a physiotherapist for professional guidance in resolving your symptoms.
